SCIENTIFIC NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

JUNE 2010

Dr Michael Bunce of Murdoch University and his team have isolated ancient DNA from the fossilised eggshell remains of extinct birds.

Dr Bunce's doctoral student, Charolotte OSkam, said: "We were really surprised to discover that ancient DNA is well-preserved in fossil eggshells, particularly the heaviest bird to have existed, called the elephant bird called Aepyornis, which is now extinct. Researchers have tried unsuccessfully to isolate DNA from fossil eggshell for years, but it just turned out that they were using a method designed for bone that was not suitable for fossil eggshell."

The publishing of this data shows how DNA up to 19,000 years old is a good source of ancient DNA especially in warmer climates such as Australia.

Fossils of actual intact animals are not that common, eggshells however are frequently recovered from and have been used extensively as a tool for radiocarbon dating and as markers for the pasts climate. This DNA profiling will now help to increase the understanding of these ages past.

The team will continue to study the eggshells from a number of ancient sites in New Zealand to seek more information on humans and the moa, a gian bird was pushed to extinction over 600 years ago.

The study of DNA often uses the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for analysis and investigation. Biohit produces micro-volume pipets for use in the PCR process of liquid handling.
